The mattress sits inside a tray of solid oak panels, with a 10 cm ledge running round all four sides. People use the ledge instead of a nightstand, which is the point: in a room too narrow for a bed and two tables, this is the bed and the tables.
It is low. At 24 cm to the top of the slats it suits a mattress of 20 cm or more and a person who does not mind a bit of a reach in the morning. The smoked option is a darker oil, not a stain; the grain stays visible.
